I heard this message by Al Mohler recently about the need for creeds. He said that we as believers need creeds to sumerize what the Scripture says. The creed is not held as Biblical Truth, but if it correctly reflects what the Bible says it should be defended. I have seen people on several web site attack creeds of the Church and the need for them. I would say that yes we do need creeds. We need to have a doctrinal statement of our belief that we are willing to put in writting and defend. Take the early Church fathers as an example. They wrote to first creed that we have and it is given to us in the Scripture.
1Co 15:3-7 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, (5) and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. (6) After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; (7) then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;
Php 2:6-11 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, (7) but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (9) Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, (10) that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, (11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
