My wife and I were reading this morning in John chapter 10 where Jesus is teaching that those who are His sheep hear His voice and follow Him. In this passage we see there were some of the Jews who did not understand what He was teaching. They accused Him of being demon possessed. Others recognized the fact that a demon cannot heal people. Some of the Jews took up stones to kill Jesus and He asked them “I showed you many good works from the Father, for which of them are you stoning Me?” (Jn 10:32). To which they replied that they were not going to stone Him for His works, but rather for claiming to be God. The Jews perfectly understood that Jesus was claiming to be God and that He was claiming to be the Christ.
If you go to an earlier passage in John chapter 1 the Pharisees sent people to ask John the Baptist if he was the Christ. John replied that he was not, but that he had come to prepare the way for the Lord. The Pharisees and the Jews were waiting for the Christ and they were waiting in anticipation of Him. When John the Baptist came on the scene they asked him if he was the Christ. If he had said yes they probably would have followed him. He said no, I am preparing the way for Him and then latter when John baptized Jesus he said this is the One I told you about yet the Jews did not believe him.
